The Town of Gander, a thriving community within central Newfoundland, is seeking a motivated and career-minded Director of Recreation & Community Services.
Gander has a population of approximately 12,500 serving an additional 81,000; attractive housing, boating, cross country skiing, an 18-hole golf course, excellent snowmobiling trails and modern health and education facilities, which make Gander an ideal place to live and work. The Town has made great strides in the area of recreation and will continue to do so with the continued development of facilities and leisure programs.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director is responsible for overseeing all recreation and community services. The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and leadership in the planning, development and implementation of comprehensive recreation programs that supports active and healthy lifestyles for residents of Gander.
This position is responsible for preparation of the department’s annual and long term operational and capital budgets; the planning, developing and organizing comprehensive parks and open space facilities as well as evolving leisure trends. The Director will provide strategic advice to Council and work closely with Town partners and stakeholders, and maintain effective working relationships with Council, department staff and other employees while accomplishing department objectives and goals within guidelines established by the Town Council and Chief Administrative Officer.
The incumbent will possess progressive experience in effectively managing a Recreation & Community Services Department, holding a Degree in Community Recreation or related disciplines with a minimum of five (5) years recreational management experience. Experience working in a municipal environment would be an asset. Qualified candidates will be part of the Senior Management Team and must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and team leadership skills.

The Town of Gander has an immediate opening for a Facility Operator position within the Department of Recreation and Community Services.
Under the direction of the Recreation Facilities Operations Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating the Ice Resurfacer along with other ice maintenance equipment, janitorial services, routine maintenance and general repairs at the Gander Community Centre.
We are looking for an individual with the understanding and experience to provide good customer service to our patrons. The successful candidate must be a team player, well organized with strong time management skills, a proactive thinker and a good communicator with the ability to take initiative and to think and work independently.
The candidate must have completed high school and hold a valid Class 5 Drivers License. Candidates must hold a Refrigeration “B” Ticket and will be required to provide a Certificate of Conduct.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Operating the ice resurfacer to clean, smooth and prepare the ice surface of the rink for activities such as hockey and figure skating.
• Janitorial duties such as cleaning floors, seating areas, glass, washrooms, showers and other areas within Gander Community Centre.
• Clearing snow and ice from walkways, fire exits and parking areas.
• Providing assistance in the setup and take down for special events within and outside of the Community Centre.
• Making minor repairs and adjustments to building contents (i.e. carpentry, plumbing, etc.)
• Collecting tickets and serving as doorman as required.
• Providing adequate levels of security and enforcing arena regulations.
• Adhering to and following all Occupational Health & Safety rules and regulations.
• Responding to user groups and the general public in a polite, informative, caring and effective manner.
SALARY: Unionized position – $22.11/hr, 40 hrs/wk
