The Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development promotes healthy aging across the lifespan of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Department acts as a centre of expertise on seniors and aging and promotes and supports the healthy behaviours of individuals and families where they live, work, play and commute. Focus is placed on issues such as healthy eating, physical activity, recreation, sport, tobacco control, injury prevention, child and youth development, mental health promotion, and environmental health. These priorities are advanced through such strategies as the implementation of healthy public policy, the creation of supportive environments, the support of community action, and the development of personal skills. The Department is also committed to making sure people with disabilities are included in all aspects of society, and to promoting self-reliance, opportunity, and access to key supports for persons vulnerable to poverty.
