Recreation and Sport For Persons With A Disability Initiative
January 5, 2016
In October, 2014, the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development (SWSD) hosted a roundtable on recreation and sport for persons with a disability. This meeting engaged various stakeholders in a half day meeting to discuss the challenges, opportunities and key issues. A number of recommendations came out of that event, including the desire for a coordinated approach to provide supports for physical activity, recreation and sport for persons with a disability to increase participation levels, support development and enhance/improve access. After review of the report and the recommendations, the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development has engaged Recreation NL to serve as the managing partner for this initiative.
Here are some key highlights that this project will consist of:
– Work with a steering committee consisting of representatives from the Recreation, Sport, Education and Disability sectors.
– Distribute grants geared towards recreation and sport for persons with a disability to improve opportunities to be physically active.
– Enhance the awareness and education about persons with disabilities within the recreation, sport and physical activity sector.
– Hosting Annual Stakeholder Meetings with individuals from the sector.
Recreation NL looks forward to working on this initiative to enhance and improve the opportunities for persons with a disability in the recreation, sport and physical activity sector.
