(St. John’s, NL) – Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador (RNL) recently proclaimed June as Recreation Month. On June 16, the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, signed the official proclamation declaring June 2020 as Recreation Month in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our government recognizes the vital role recreation plays in helping us lead healthy, active and balanced lives. We remain committed to supporting recreation partners throughout the province, including Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador’s important work to provide leadership and training for recreation professionals and volunteers. I encourage everyone to celebrate Recreation Month by staying active and involved as we adjust to a new normal during this unprecedented time,” said Minister Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development.

“Today we recognize June as Recreation Month. This year, more than any other year, it is important to remember that recreation is all of the activities that bring health and wellness to our lives,” said Gerry Hall, President of RNL.

“We want to remind people that they can enjoy recreational activities from the comforts of their home/ backyard/ neighbourhood. This year, we want to encourage everyone to celebrate Recreation Month in a whole new way.”

Recreation Month helps the public view recreation as more than just physical activity. It also encompasses as aspects of social, intellectual, creative and spiritual pursuits that enhance individual and community wellbeing. “Through this new understanding of recreation, people have access to countless recreational opportunities right in their homes,” said Hall. “Finding all of the activities that bring well-being into one’s life and implying that to the ‘new normal’ will help people realize that recreation doesn’t stop, it just needs a new light this year.”

Recreation NL would like to remind the public that while enjoying Recreation Month, please adhere to social distancing protocols and follow Public Health guidelines.
