RECREATION MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
In recent months, Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador conducted a survey to determine the feasibility of formalized professional development for its members. The survey results indicate that a vast majority of members are interested in pursuing educational opportunities that would enhance their skill levels in the operation and maintenance of recreation facilities.
Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador contacted the College of the North Atlantic to discuss a partnership that would culminate in the development and delivery of training courses that would benefit the workers, the facility, and the community. A collaborative approach will ensure members receive quality training directly responsive to practitioner needs.
The demand for skilled workers continues to affect all industries across Canada as employers compete for a skilled available labour force. Formalized certification offered by a recognized educational provider is the preferred choice for those looking to address the demand for recognized quality training programs. The College welcomes the opportunity to work collaboratively with Recreation NL and its members in the development, design, and delivery of training courses in the operation and management of recreation facilities. Training opportunities will provide members with the knowledge and skills required to support them in their day-to-day activities.
The intent of the proposed certification is to provide leading-edge industry-related training to various employees that will assist them in maintaining required skill levels in an ever changing environment.
On November 7th, 2007 the College of the North Atlantic, Contract Training and Continuing Education Division conducted a focus group session in Recreation Management Training. Recreation Leaders representing the key sectors of recreation participated in the focus group session. The College generated a summary report from the session that identified the framework for the establishment of a new certification program for recreation personnel.
A second meeting of the focus group is set for December 12th at which time the key components of this professional development will be confirmed.
Our goal is to have this new continuing education ready to present to our members at the 2008 Annual General Meeting and Conference set for May 22nd - 24th, 2008 in Grand Falls - Winsor.
