In June, Recreation NL distributed $2,500.00 to eight different community groups around the province. Cormack was one of those recipients who thought outside of the box and used the $500.00 grant to provide their teens in the comm unity with a leadership training opportunity. This is training that they will have for a lifetime and which was used to mentor and support younger children to get physically active through summer recreation programs while helping these 13-19 year olds be active in the process.

“Cormack summer students joined others from neighbouring communities who lead summer programs in the district to participate in HIGH FIVE’s Principles of Healthy Childhood Development training before the launch of their programs. Getting together like this enabled sharing of ideas and underlined for them the importance of using the HIGH FiVE principles in recreation programs. Our summer day camp program was highly successful and increased physical activity for both children and the youth leaders for six weeks of sports, healthy eating and enjoying the great outdoors.” – Marie Morris, Cormack Recreation Committee.

Recreation NL’s next quarterly grant deadline for the ParticipACTION Teen Challenge Physical Activity Grants is due Friday, August 21st, 2015. For more information about the Teen Challenge please contact Ashley Button at
