Eat Great & Participate

Since 2009, Eat Great and Participate has been promoting healthy eating to children and youth, and working to increase access to healthy food and beverage choices in recreation, sport and community settings across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Partnerships have been formed with recreation committees, town councils, arena/facility managers, community groups, parents, volunteers, youth, schools, and sport teams from across the province to explore new and creative ways to promote healthy eating.

Great Things

Eat Great and Participate is pleased to launch our Great Things campaign! This campaign highlights the great work communities across the province are doing to promote and support healthy eating. From adopting healthy eating policies, to making healthy food and beverage options available in public venues, recreation and municipal leaders are coming together to help enhance access to healthy choices for people in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Community Healthy Eating Framework

Has your town adopted a healthy eating policy, and is wondering how to put it into action? Check out our Community Healthy Eating Framework which aims to support municipalities that have adopted a healthy eating policy by providing ideas and resources to help promote and support the policy throughout the community.

Promoting and supporting your healthy eating policy can include:

  • Establishing a committee to support the implementation of your healthy eating policy
  • Performing a food and beverage assessment of your community facilities, programs and events
  • Determining priority areas to focus on as you move toward creating healthier food environments in your community
  • Building partnerships to help support your work and encourage partners and other community organizations to adopt their own healthy eating policies
  • Exploring opportunities to develop programs that focus on food literacy, and increase access to healthy food in the community

Below you’ll find the Framework, as well as other resources and tools to support you in promoting healthy eating throughout your community:

Healthy Eating Resources

Check out our suite of print resources designed to support you in making healthier food and beverage choices more available in your community. Our resources are based on the latest healthy eating recommendations according to Canada’s Food Guide, which was updated in January 2019.

Healthy Eating Policies

Is your community, facility, or organization thinking about adopting a healthy eating policy? There are clear benefits of having a policy in place:

  • Defines “healthy eating” – this can mean different things to different people! We want to promote healthy food and beverages found in Canada’s Food Guide;
  • Ensures healthy eating will continue to be promoted, even after staff/volunteer changes;
  • Highlights your town/organization as a leader in health and wellness!
