The Human Resources Division is presently accepting applications for the permanent position of Supervisor – Sport Field Maintenance, Parks and Open Spaces Division, Department of Public Works.

This position reports to the Operations Supervisor, Parks & Open Spaces Divisions. The successful applicant must have a strong desire to be cooperative and will be required to be a team player in order to be successful in this position. S/he must be highly organized, innovative, conscious of changing priorities and willing and able to adapt quickly to any situation. S/he will maintain safe workplaces, procedures and practices. This position is required to work shift work and overtime to meet the objectives. This position is ideally suited to those with an outdoor sports background.


Supervise the maintenance of sport fields and hard surface courts. This position is also responsible for the preparation of facilities prior to tournaments and other special events.
Manage capital improvement projects and administer contracts during the construction and maintenance of outdoor sport facilities. The ability to effectively coordinate the functions of multiple contractors and City divisions is an important part of this job. It is also important to have considerable knowledge of principles and practices of project coordination and construction processes.
Review and follow plans and specifications associated with capital improvement or renovation projects.
Supervise, direct, and deploy staff and equipment for designated sport and special events. Schedule work tasks and staff for efficiency and cost effectiveness, also includes the maintenance of daily personnel time records.
Ensure the completion of work orders; pertinent data must be collected and submitted in a timely manner.
Communicate and cooperate with City personnel, contractors, suppliers, members of the public, and public utilities as situations require.
Implement the Collective Agreement where it applies, recommend and administer discipline as required.
Conduct inspections and investigations; provide written and verbal reports as required.
Maintain computerized database, work orders, requisitions, purchase orders and complaints systems information.
Place a high value on work site safety, conduct toolbox talks, and be well versed in OH&S policies and procedures.
Be willing to take on jobs to balance the team workload.

Qualifications and Experience:

Applicants for this position should be an accredited Professional Technologist with a C.E.T. designation or possess a diploma in Landscape Construction, or related discipline.
Team player with a minimum of five years supervisory experience in the area of construction, sport field, or park maintenance with experience in snow and ice control. Carpentry experience will be an asset.
Applicants must possess a minimum of class 5 driver’s license and be prepared to take additional training for other classes and endorsements, etc.
Applicants should be familiar with and have an interest in the requirements of sport fields and hard surface courts.
Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to deal with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner; ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast paced environment; and have computer experience in spreadsheet development and maintenance.
Familiarity with motorized turf equipment, light duty and heavy equipment would also be beneficial.
The successful applicant, as a condition of employment, will be required to complete post-secondary courses as deemed necessary to address the evolving needs of this position.
Applicants possessing an equivalent combination of training and experience may also be considered.

Applicant must have a clear understanding and awareness of the Work Place Health, Safety and Compensation Commission (WHSCC) Legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Human Rights Legislation. Training in Occupational Health & Safety and WHSCC Legislation will be considered an asset.

This is a management position. The salary is set on Grade 4 of Management Pay Plan, with a range of $68,317 – $88,151 per annum.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Shift Work as Required
