ParticipACTION success story

The ParticipACTION Teen Challenge, coordinated through Recreation NL in this province and sponsored by Coca-Cola Canada, is a national physical activity program delivered by a network of community-based organizations working together to break Untitled1down the barriers teens (13-19) face in getting active. Community organization such as Mount Pearl Senior High and other community groups that work directly with teens can apply through the program to receive funding to support physical activity for teens. Check out what the students and teachers at Mount Pearl Senior High did this year!

At the beginning of June this year, 40 grade 9 students from Mount Pearl Senior High were able to enjoy the great outdoors of Newfoundland and Labrador and hiked two sections of the East Coast Trail. On a sunny, but cool morning, we set off at 8 a.m. from the school, where a bus picked us up and drove all the students including 3 teachers to Witless Bay where our hike started. The trail took us close to the shoreline with rocky beaches, wooden paths with spectacular views of the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve.

After 2 hours of hiking, we stopped at a peaceful meadow close to Mobile Point. There we had our lunches and the students even had the opportunity to make a small fire to roast some S’mores.

Next, our hike continued to Mobile, where we connected to the trailhead of the Tinkers Point Path. We finally arrived in theCribbies in Tors Cove at 2 p.m. after almost 15 km of hiking. What an accomplishment for all the students. On behalf of Mount Pearl Senior High – Thank you ParticipACTION for making this wonderful excursion possible.

The next quarterly grant deadline for ParticipACTION Teen Challenge is Friday August 21, 2015.
